Robert Reich update #2

Today someone asked if our town is a sanctuary city.  Our city council, being afraid of tRump, declared our town a "welcoming city".  Wow, can you imagine we are so afraid of our "leader"?

I do not believe a community should thwart efforts of capturing people that have come into the USA illegally in all cases because I do believe that there are some cases that are justified in crossing any border.  I also believe that some people have been abused in custody, which I think is a disgrace.  And out of all this, I am shocked still of the place where we are at....that we are afraid of our country's leader.  Wow.

1. He told you NATO was “obsolete,” claiming it doesn’t fight terrorism. You bought it. Now he says NATO is “no longer obsolete.”
2. He told you he’d “bring down drug prices” by making deals with drug companies. You bought it. Now the White House says that promise is “inoperative.”
3. He said he’d close “special interest loopholes that have been so good for Wall Street investors but unfair to American workers." You bought it. Then he picked a Wall Street financier Stephen Schwarzman to run his strategic and policy forum, who compares closing those loopholes to Hitler’s invasion of Poland.
4. He said that on Day One he’d label China a “currency manipulator.” You bought it. Then he met with China’s president and declared "China is not a currency manipulator."
5. He said he’d “renegotiate NAFTA” on Day One. You bought it. He hasn't.
6. He said he wouldn’t bomb Syria. You bought it. Then he bombed Syria.
7. He said he’d build a wall along the border with Mexico. You bought it. Now his secretary of homeland security says “It’s unlikely that we will build a wall.”
8. He said he’d clean the Washington swamp. You bought it. Then he brought into his administration more billionaires, CEOs, and Wall Street moguls than in any administration in history, to make laws that will enrich their businesses, along with former lobbyists, lawyers and consultants who are crafting new policies for the same industries they recently worked for.
9. He said he’d repeal Obamacare and replace it with something “wonderful.” You bought it. Then he didn’t.
10. He said he’d use his business experience to whip the White House into shape. You bought it. Then he created the most chaotic, dysfunctional, back-stabbing White House in modern history, in which no one is in charge.
11. He said he’d release his tax returns, eventually. You bought it. He hasn’t, and says he never will.
12. He said he’d divest himself from his financial empire, to avoid any conflicts of interest. You bought it. He remains heavily involved in his businesses, makes money off of foreign dignitaries staying at his Washington hotel, gets China to give the Trump brand trademark and copyright rights, travels to promote his properties at taxpayer expense, manipulates the stock market on a daily basis, and has more conflicts of interest than can even be counted.
13. He said Clinton was in the pockets of Goldman Sachs, and would do whatever they said. You bought it. Then he put half a dozen Goldman Sachs executives in positions of power in his administration.
14. He said he’d surround himself with all the best and smartest people. You bought it. Then he put Betsy DeVos, opponent of public education, in charge of education; Jeff Sessions, opponent of the Voting Rights Act, in charge of voting rights; Ben Carson, opponent of the Fair Housing Act, in charge of fair housing; Scott Pruitt, climate change denier, in charge of the Environmental Protection Agency; and Russian quisling Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State.
10. He said he’d faithfully execute the law. You bought it. Then he said his predecessor, Barack Obama, spied on him, without any evidence of Obama ever doing so, in order to divert attention from the FBI’s investigation into collusion between his campaign and Russian operatives to win the election.
15. He said he knew more about strategy and terrorism than the generals did. You bought it. Then he green lighted a disastrous raid in Yemen- even though his generals said it would be a terrible idea. This raid resulted in the deaths of a Navy SEAL, an 8-year old American girl, and numerous civilians. The actual target of the raid escaped, and no useful intel was gained.
16. He called Barack Obama “the vacationer-in-Chief” and accused him of playing more rounds of golf than Tiger Woods. He promised to never be the kind of president who took cushy vacations on the taxpayer’s dime, not when there was so much important work to be done. You bought it. He has by now spent more taxpayer money on vacations than Obama did in the first 3 years of his presidency. Not to mention all the money taxpayers are spending protecting his family, including his two sons who travel all over the world on Trump business.
17. He called CNN, the Washington Post and the New York Times “fake news” and said they were his enemy. You bought it. Now he gets his information from Fox News, Breitbart, Gateway Pundit, and InfoWars.

Last week of March

Monday - Threatened to defund saanctuary cities
Tuesday - Climate change policies put in during President Obama's Admin were undone.
Wednesday - Cruis Chrisite to lead fight against Opiod addiction.
Thursday - Meeting with Chinese President announced to be held in Mara Lago this weekend.
Friday - Trump signs executive orders on trade.

rTump's 10 major campaign promises and status so far.

 From Robert Reich:

Here is the list of tRump's 10 major campaign promises, and what’s happened to them so far:
1. Repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act: Dead.
2. Ban Muslim travel to the U.S: Stopped by the federal courts.
3. Build a “wall” on border with Mexico: Nowhere.
4. Cut taxes for corporations: Nowhere.
5. Embark on “yuge” infrastructure investment: Nowhere.
6. Create “millions” of new manufacturing jobs. Nothing, other than expansions that already had been planned by several corporations.
7. "Drain the swamp" of Washington: Just the opposite. He's filled his Cabinet with billionaires, Wall Street moguls, and corporate influence-peddlars.
8. Deport millions of unauthorized immigrants: Underway, in a cruel dragnet that’s sweeping up people who have been productive members of their communities for years, and young people who came here as toddlers.
9. Renegotiate trade deals: Nowhere.
10. Bring a "business discipline" to Washington and "whip government into shape:" Just the opposite. His White House is in chaos, the executive branch is barely functioning, and Congress is a total mess.

Roger Stone, Turmp advisor, admits contact with DNC Hacker...there is more

Roger Stone admitted that he had had several contacts with the DNC Hacker through twitter following a hack of the DNC.
The hacker, known as Guccifer  2.0 is believed to be a Russian operative that Roger Stone congratulated for hacking in Moscow's attempt to interfere in the 2016 US election in order to help Trump win.

GStone told the Times he exchanged a handful of messages with Guccifer 2.0 in the weeks following a hack of the DNC, which was revealed in late July.
In one message from Aug. 14, Stone said he was "delighted" that Guccifer 2.0's Twitter account had been reinstated after being suspended.
One message Guccifer 2.0 wrote to Stone:  "wow.  thank u for writing back and thank you for an article about me!!! do u find anything interesting in the docs I posted?"  This referred to an article Stone wrote for Breibart News on Aug 5 attributed Guccifer 2.0 with the breach.  "I'm pleased to say that u r great men.  Please tell me if I can help u anyhow. It would be a great pleasure to me." he also wrote to Stone on Aug 17.

TrumpCare, TrumpCare, TrumpCare, TrumpCare, TrumpCare, TrumpCare! Take that White House!

The republicans hate President Obama soooo much they are destroying anything that he had his finger on or happened while he was president whether it was a good thing or had flaws in.

The health care act, "The Affordable Health Care Act" which republicans hated from the beginning and so they dubbed "ObamaCare" had a very rocky start just getting passed.  I watched some of the very many hearings on it and was amazed.  The repubs were trying to block every move.  The biggest one I watched was when they refused to allow a bargaining power for the AHCA to get lower prices for meds.  I couldn't believe it.  At the time, senior citizens were chartering buses to Canada to go up and buy cheaper meds because they couldn't afford them in the US.  You know the drugs must have been so high to make it worthwhile for them to charter a bus and take that long trip.

The repubs would not only not allow the AHCA bargaining power, they then passed a law that it was illegal for US citizens to buy their meds anywhere else!!  Can you believe it!

Anyhow, the Democrates were compromising all over to get something enough repubs would pass.  They dropped single-payer, for instance.  Anyhow, once the weakened bill passed then the repubs said it was so bad and railled against it ever since.

I know at least 4 people that were tremendously helped by ObamaCare.  One at least figures her life was saved.

So, anyhow TRUMPCARE.  They took out the funding for it.  ObamaCare required everyone to have insurance.  If you didn't you had to pay a fine.  This is so the fund had lots of healthy people in it and so their premiums paid for the sick people.  That is how regular insurance works....with car insurance they have lots of good drivers and their premiums help cover the bad ones.

Any how, that is called the risk factor and it is a normal thing.  The Repubs thought this was just terrible.  So, now their plan has no funding for it EXCEPT they plan on charging high premiums for infants and older people because they are the ones that have higher medical needs.  Sorry to tell them but these are the demographics that DON'T HAVE MONEY.   They took off the requirement that evreyone has to have insurance so there goes a lot of money, especially from the healthy young adults. And the fine for not having insurance is gone too.

Soooo, where is the sustaining funding from?

So far the AARP, AMA hospital orgs, etc. said they do not support TRUMPIDON"TCARE.

I am so sick of this clown in the White House

Last weekend tRump threw a fit, again, and started a twitter binge.  This time he says that President Obama wiretapped tRump tower and that tRumps phones have been wiretaps.

Of course he can just libel and lie and nothing happens.  So disgusting.
So-called experts seem to think that it is a diversion from the Russian contacts stories.

Speaking of Russians:

Remember the British spy that sent the Russian dossier information on tRump a while back.  This spy had said he got his information from a Russian spy.  The British spy has gone underground, afraid of being "knocked off".

Then happens, this is the Russian spy:

Hopefully the Dems will be able to push through a Special Prosecutor for investigate the Russian connections of the tRump people.  It used to be the Republicans that were over-paranoid about Russia.  Now they have no fear at all because their Saint Rump is best friends with Putin.

EPA destruction continues

Trump's administration is considering plans to cut staff at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by one-fifth , according to a document reviewed by Washington Post reporters. The EPA cuts would eliminate key programs.

- Removed a rule requiring oil companies to disclose payments to foreign governments (2/1)
- Revoked a rule banning lead bullets (3/1)

- Dropped a rule that requires oil companies to document the amount of methane, an extremely potent greenhouse gas, they emit (3/2)
This absolute disrespect for our environment by this administration is truly saddening.

Press Attack

The White House requested the FBI to publicly "knock down" media reports about communications between Donald Trump's associates and Russians known to US intelligence during the 2016 presidential campaign, according to multiple US Officials that were briefed on the matter. (CNN)

Feb. 19, 2017

Well, lets see, I know there were some things that happened with different Administration people but I have forgotten what they were.  Kellyanne says she is not going to be on air any more....thank God.  Her bold face lying was making me just turn the channel.  She is aging faster than twump.  Then the Sec of Labor nominee stepped down amidst scandal.

_____
twump has gone completely fruitcake at his "campaign" rally in Florida.  He said that there were riots or something in Sweden last night......FALSE NEWS.  He is so stupid he watches FOX news and takes it as truth.  The Swedes thinks he is nuts because they have not had terrorist  problems.  OK, we have Australia, Sweden, Mexico, so far insulted by twump. And, my daughter reminded me, also he stirred up China with his 2 China policy which he quickly changed back to a 1-China policy.

Since Mike Flynn was fireed from National Security adviser because of his connections with Russia, twump is looking for a replacement.  General David Petraeus dropped out of the running...do you blame him.

February 18, 2017 Another disturbing week

This seems to be the normal now days.  Things that are good are washed away by the trump admin and congress.  I swear the republicans want us to return to the 1700s.  There really are reasons many of these laws and regulations have been put in.  We learn as we go on and they were established to solve a problem.  Just because the problem doesn't exist any more doesn't mean the law should be done away with.....usually it is keeping the problem at bay.

So, this week:

twump has a popularity of 38% in the largest polls.
He is still tweeting crazy twitters and ranting whenever a camera is on him.  This week he has been mad at the FBI CIA, John McCann, Hillary Clinton, and biggest of all, the terrible Media!   There are probably a few more I can't remember now.

National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was fired by twump for lying to VP Pence saying he had not discussed sanctions with the Russian Ambassador when he called him the day President Obama put sanctions on Russia for hacking the DNC and for trying to sway the election.

It turns out information was leaked out that the phone calls were tapped by the FBI (common knowledge).  They showed that Flynn had lied to Pence and also the FBI.  The Temp. Attorney General Sally Bates (the one trump had fired regarding the immigration ban) had told both President Obama and trump that Flynn had made the call and did discuss easing the sanctions. trump didn't think anything wrong with doing that, though it is against the law for civilians to conduct foreign diplomacy,

Instead twrump has been ranting about the Fake News and the Fake Media.  He says Flynn is a great man and didn't do anything wrong (even though he fired him).

______
Jeff sessions was confirmed as Attorney General.
_____
twrump signed a bill allowing pollution of streams by coal mining operations.

_____
twrump signed a bill allowing oil companies to be able to hide bribes to foreign governments.  Tollison should be really happy with this one.  trump said it will take away a regulation from "burdening American extraction companies".

The President Obama-era transgender protection effort was reversed by a judge ruling.  Immediately Jeff Sessions said the DoJ will not contest the judge's ruling.

_______
Andrew Puzder was nominated as Sec. of Labor.  but twump recalled his name after several scandals.
He nominated Alex Acosta.  Acosta had been in charge of challenging the registration of 23,000 voters during the Bush admin.

_____
He issued a new ObamaCare rule that makes getting coverage more difficult.

_____
ICE raids have been conducted in several states, arresting "dreamers" or others never convicted of a crime.

_____
twump gave a news conference yesterday.  Ranted on the Media, praised Flynn, praised himself for winning election and acted very weird.
_____
He will be holding a campaign rally in Florida as he is going down on his weekend trip to mara-laga,  He seems to miss the adulation of his supporters.

to allow coal-mining operations to put more pollution in streams.

from Mother Jones:

Council staff members are now being told to keep papers to a single page, with lots of graphics and maps. “The president likes maps,” one official said.
_____
Two people with direct access to the White House leadership said Mr. Flynn was surprised to learn that the State Department and Congress play a pivotal role in foreign arms sales and technology transfers. So it was a rude discovery that Mr. Trump could not simply order the Pentagon to send more weapons to Saudi Arabia — which is clamoring to have an Obama administration ban on the sale of cluster bombs and precision-guided weapons lifted — or to deliver bigger weapons packages to the United Arab Emerates.

_____
They are also going after the Endangered Species Act.

____
Micheal Flynn has resigned as National Security Director.  He was talking policy with Russia before tRump was inaugarated.  Against the law.  He was telling the Russians not to worry about the sanctions that President Obama put in place, that tRump would take care of them when he got in.

2/11/17 Third week of Trump

It is very hard to keep up, but these are some of the things that happened this week.
_______
Congressman Bill Pascrell wrote a letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) ,  demanding a law which has been on the books since 1924 be used to force Trump to release his taxes. The law says members of Congress can insist on seeing documents to address any potential conflicts of interest, and Trump must adhere to the congressional order. From "The Nation"

A Washington state judge ruled put a stay on the travel ban because of the injuries done to their state.  Travel ban stay is effective on all the the US.

tRump labeled the Washington judge a "so-called judge" alarming experts that felt it was an attack on the fundamental system of checks and balances.

He fought for the travel ban in court and lost.

___
He signed 3 tough-on crime executive orders (that don't really do anything other than telling federal agencies to enforce existing laws, share more intell info, create various studies and commissions about crime.

___
Turned around his view of recognizing Taiwan on its own (which had upset China).  The One China policy had been in affect since 1979 in the US.  Even though flawed tRump had called it into question without building any diplomatic groundwork or giving advance warning and doing it before he became president.

He also had tough talk followed by a retreat to routine policy on settlements in Israel and two-state solution, administration actions on Iran following an Iran missile attack, and now relations with China.

___
Released a list of terrorist attacks the media supposedly didn't cover.  He is still on a media attack on the "dishonest" media.  It was proved the media had covered all incidents on the list, even where no one had been hurt in a foreign country. He is trying to make people not trust the main stream media.

___
Kellyanne Conway gave a "free commercial" for Ivanka's company, violating federal ethics rules.  She has been counseled.

___
Melania tRump sued  a British tabloid for publishing she had been an "elite escort" and that it hurt her brand... Her case suggested strongly that she intended to capitalize on being "first lady" to establish "multi-million dollar business relationships for a multi-year term."

___
Obamacare "Repeal and Replace" that was to take place the first day he came in  has gone from "immediate" to "its going to take a little longer.
__
The Secretary of Education“Individuals with Disabilities Education Act” website has been removed from the Internet Education site. Why? This is unclear, but it has been the doing of the newly confirmed, and woefully unqualified, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos who only got her job because her family has donated over $200 million to Republican candidates.

A break from the real world - Pacific Grove

A couple of wonderful, beautiful days in Pacific Grove earlier this week.

This painting started out as a value study in sepia tones.  Yesterday I added the color.

This painting was done at Point Lobos, south of Carmel.  Another gorgeous day!  The sunlight was flowing down the cliff and hitting the rocks below.  By the time I finished the details the water had risen and the cliff looked entirely different, no sunlit spots.

1/30/17 Immigration Ban Fallout

People are protesting all around the US especially at airports.  Families are being broken up and detained even if they live in the US and have valid green cards.  Those that have worked with the US military as interpreters have even been held.

tRumps minions are spinning it that it was President Obamas fault.

President Obama put restrictions on those people did not have to have a visa to come in to the US from those countries.  So sick of hearing the liars spin.  They think we are stupid. . .Well, I guess some are.

All this has started the violence against anyone that looks foreign or Muslim.  Even Quebec had a mosque shooting - 6 dead while praying.

I am leaving town for a few days, maybe the world will be back in shape by the time I get back.
Actually the rump will probably have destroyed something else by then judging by his performance so far.  And only 1 week down....

12/29/17

Many legal immigrants with green cards cannot return after being out of the USA.  Especially bad are those that helped our military as interpreters and face possible death if they can't get back here.

It is a good thing that Egypt did not have tRump as leader when Joseph and the Holy family immigrated to Egypt to protect Jesus and Mary.

The red countries are the ones that have the immigrant ban on them and the yellow ones are the ones that terrorists HAVE come from but they are not banned ........maybe because tRump has business in those countries, just maybe

Protesters are gathering at many airports tonight.  About 10 pm Eastern time a Judge put a hold on the immigration ban regarding the people with green cards... We don't know how long the hold will last.

It turns out that the tRump Admin didn't even ck with legal to see what the implications legally where going to be.  These people are irresponsible.

2. He signed orders clearing the way for the disputed Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines to proceed. As recently as last summer, the president owned between $15,000 and $50,000 in stock in the company building the Dakota project, and its chief executive donated $100,000 to the Trump Victory Fund, a joint effort between Trump and the Republican Party. (Trump claims to have sold off his stock portfolio before the election, though he has not provided documentation proving he did.)
3. He signed an order suspending visas from seven predominantly Muslim countries. Not on the list were other predominantly Muslim countries where Trump has existing businesses: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia, Turkey, Qatar, Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, and Azerbaijan.
4. Trump is pushing forward his plan for a massive, privatization-heavy infrastructure bill that appears tailor-made for cronyism and self-dealing. (For more on this, please see our video.)
5. Based on the new power of the “Trump” brand, the CEO of Trump Hotels announced a plan to triple the number of Trump hotels in the United States.
6. The Trump Organization hired a longtime Republican lawyer as its ethics adviser and a longtime Trump executive as its chief compliance counsel. It’s all optics. Neither will raise a fuss because they’d put their jobs at risk.
7. The Trump-owned Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, doubled its initiation fee to $200,000 for new members.
8. The American Chamber of Commerce in Canada, a business lobby focused on North American trade, made a sudden, last-second decision to move a scheduled event from the Vancouver home of a U.S. diplomat to the newest addition to the Trump Hotel family in the same city. (The Trump Organization does not own the Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver, but it makes money managing the property and cutting naming-rights deals.)
________

Bannan tells the press corps. to shut up and listen for awhile.  He wants them to listen to more or their alternative facts.

__________

Oh, and he did ban gov workers from lobbying for a number of years.  Didn't hear much about that since his immigration ban blew up.

I actually agree with it.

And today: the wall and a Muslim ban.

Friday, Trump signed an executive order explicitly freezing refugee applications from Syria. It's unclear how his pledge to help persecuted Christians from that country will accord with the order.
